With Summer less than 2 months away, now is a good time to plan a trip down to the Mornington Peninsula, specifically Sorrento. It has become a yearly event, heading down after Christmas when it is really busy. Sorrento has been a holiday destination for lots of Melburnians over the years, and trying to get accomodation in the peak season can get very hard (especially if you leave it late).

If your looking for a great beach holiday, Sorrento or Portsea is the place to be, you have all the beach along the bay to enjoy some nice calm water, or for the surfers and wave-riders, you can head over to the back beach. A sunny summer day brings out all the boys and their toys, speed boats, jet-skis and kite boards for those windy days.

Head out for a drink down at the packed Portsea Pub, or Sorrento Pub, meet a few new people, then (for all the youngens) head up to the Conti for a late night of partying. Early rise for a breakfast down the main street in Sorrento and you can really see why this area has become such a popular holiday area.

For those who haven’t booked anything like myself, you should get a few people together and rent a house from one of the holiday renting websites, one of which is Stayz.com.au.

Spring is one of those great seasons. The cold winter is just ending, and summer is just around the corner. What better way to kick off the season with Spring Carnival.

For those that have not been to a race during the Spring Carnival, you are really missing out. Two races which really catch my eye are the Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day.

The race that stops the nation is on par with Grand Final day down in Victoria. Crowds gather for a barbie, a few vic bitters and to watch the horses run their race. The lucky few thousand people who turn up to Flemington on the day enjoy a great amount of drinking, often having to be carried home at the end of the day.

Oaks day is much similar to the Cup, though as womens day, there is a fine amount of women attending. Some people have said that this day has turned into a bit of a mans day (for all those guys in hope of meeting a woman), but experiencing this first hand the last couple of years, it is not so.

Gorgeous girls are everywhere, sipping on their glasses of champagne, trodding around the grass in their high heels. Then you get the few at the end of the day who are quite intoxicated, and really do need to be carried home.

So races run for 50 days from September 30th throughout country Victoria and Melbourne. Melbourne Cup Day is the 3rd of November while Oaks Day is on the 5th of November. I will be there drinking, betting, and hopefully not being carried home.

The new and improved version will not be like I had planned. It will be something a bit more personal. I will show you Melbourne from my perspective. From my night outings to my weekend jaunts. So join me on my life in Melbourne, and experience what the guide books don’t tell you.
